chance for seniors to have their pictures taken for the
yearbook and composite, as well as, the underclassmen and
faculty and staff for the yearbook. Information on who
still needs to have a picture taken is posted in all
classrooms and in the middle hall.
Academically, Lewis County High
students did well in the District Governor’s Cup
Competition. LCHS hosted the event this year and part of
it had to be postponed due to bad weather the last weekend
of January. When the competition was finished on Feb. 1,
LCHS ranked 2nd overall in the competition.
The Future Problem Solving Team and the Quick Recall Team

The juniors are busy preparing for
their ACT assessment. Each Wednesday afternoon from 3:30
to 5:30 an ACT prep class is being held for all interested
juniors. The training is computerized and is something
that students can also access from their home computers.
All juniors will take the ACT at LCHS on March 9.
On February 17-19, many seniors will
be taking the Kentucky Skills Standards Test. This test
is for seniors who have been nominated by their teachers.
There are many areas tested and if the students score
successfully they will receive a Skills Standards
Certification from the Kentucky State Department.
Some of the students wanted to do
something to help those less fortunate in Haiti after the
earthquake. A talent show for Haiti is currently being
planned by some of the students and Ms. Kayla Stafford
with the proceeds being sent to Haiti. The show is now
scheduled for February 19.
The basketball season is drawing to a
close. The next two weeks will be very busy for both the
boys and the girls in playing regular scheduled games and
make-up games. On Friday, February 12, the Lady Lions
will have their Senior Night, against Fairview, and
recognize their one senior player, Brittany Ruggles. Also
at this game the senior choir members will be recognized.
On February 16, the Lions will have their senior night

practice after the middle of February. The tennis and
track and field are also having signups and getting ready
for spring play and meets.
Updates will be made available as
events or activities may change.
What’s Happening at LCHS—January 4
Happy New Year!
Lewis County High School has returned from their
Christmas break and is heading into 2010 with great
anticipation for a successful school year. This success
will partially be judged by the Measurement of Academic
Progress (MAP) testing that will be taking place January
6th through January 15th. The MAP test is a tool used to
measure the instruction level of each student. This is the
first year for this computerized assessment. In the fall
freshmen, sophomores and juniors were tested in reading,
language usage, math, science (general) and science
process. Each content takes approximately one hour each.
The current testing for freshmen, sophomores and juniors
will include only reading and math. The test results will
show the individual student’s growth since fall. The
expectation is that each student will demonstrate at least
one year of instructional growth. The results will help
faculty make building-wide instructional decisions
regarding whole group remediation or extension activities
as well as individual remediation or extension activities
on an as needed basis.
A plus for students if that LCHS is purchasing a
computerized ACT Prep Program which students can access at
home. The order has been sent and the school should be
receiving this program shortly. As soon as the program is
installed further information will be made available.
On January 14, 15, and 16, band members Ken Howard,
Matthew Frye, Alexis Enix, and Morgan Enix will
participate in the All-District band at Ashland. The
actual performance will be at the Paramount Theater in
Ashland on the 16th at 2:00 pm. Congratulations and good
luck to these students.
The drama class is preparing for their next performance.
If you missed “It’s A Wonderful Life”, you missed an
extraordinary experience. At this time the class is
deciding upon a script to present. Auditions for the play
will most likely take place around the first of February.
We know that whatever choice the class makes, the play
will be awesome.
LCHS will be hosting the Governor’s Cup Competition this
year. The competition will be January 26 and January 30.
On the 26th the Future Problem Solving (FPS) and
composition sections will be held. On Saturday, the 30th,
all other sections will take place. Those schools
competing include Lewis County, Mason County and St.
Patrick. Come out and watch the competition on Saturday
the 30th. Good luck LCHS academic team.
The Youth Service Center was able to help out
approximately 160 students at Christmas with their Angel
Tree Program, Shop with a Cop and Children Incorporated.
Thanks to the YSC for making Christmas merrier for many
students
The seniors are planning their senior trip. The group will
go to Chicago over the spring break in April. Monies for
the trip are currently being taken. See Mrs. McCall for
information.
The juniors are making prom plans. This year’s theme will
be “Paris Runway” and will be on May 15th. The colors for
this year’s prom will be dark purple, raspberry, and
silver. More details to follow.
Until next time, have a Happy New Year!

drama department will perform a Christmas Play entitled
“It’s a Wonderful Life”. The music department will be
presenting a concert on Dec. 14. Both of these will be at
the Lewis County High Auditorium. Come out and take part

the Christmas spirit.
What’s Happening at LCHS—Nov.

On Tuesday of last week the Lewis
County High School Band of Pride traveled to Ashland and
participated in the annual Winter Parade. The band
members had a great time with the weather cooperating
nicely. The band members had decorated their instruments
with strings of lights and the color guard wore reindeer
ears as they marched along.
The girls and boys basketball teams
started their season with some scrimmages last week. On
Tuesday, Wed. 25 the Lions boys team participated in a
scrimmage at Russell against Johnson Central and lost by
one point—70-69. The Lady Lions traveled to Rowan County
and scrimmaged against Boyle County where the varsity lost
by two points. The girls open on Dec. 2 at home against
Augusta and the boys open on Dec. 1 against Ashland at
Ashland.
The art department has another
budding artist winning in art shows. At the MCC high

color drawing with her pastel entitled “The Bird”.
Kimberly won the River Sweep poster contest last year.
Congratulations to Kimberly.

in the state. Congratulations to both teams and to
Michael.
Also, a club at LCHS is making
regional headlines. The Technology Students of America (TSA)
recently had two Lewis County students named to regional
offices. Kyle Carver was named Regional Secretary and
Parker Kamer was names Regional Treasurer.
Congratulations to both of these young men.
What’s Happening at LCHS—Oct.

Lewis County High is still excited
over the Friday night football team win against West
Carter. The rain did not dampen the spirit of the Varsity
Lions as they defeated West Carter 14-6. This victory
allowed Lewis County to be in the District Playoffs for
the first time since 1993. Congratulations Lions. Good
Luck at Magoffin in your last game of the season and

cheerleaders held for the football team to run through.
This banner was designed by some students in the art
club. Those students were Kayla Bonner, Emily Childrey,
Kimberly Cropper, Dominic Everman, Saide Mora and Bailey
Pruitt. This is a reusable banner that can be used for all
home football and basketball games. If you did not get an
opportunity to see the banner, look for it at the first
home basketball game.

canned goods by any students and have it delivered to Mrs.
Noble’s room.
The entire school is participating in
Red Ribbon Week this week. Red Ribbon Week stresses
anti-drug use and students pledge to be drug free by
wearing red bracelets.
Have a good week.
What’s Happening at LCHS—Oct.
19-Oct. 23
This week as always at LCHS is full
of events and activities as was last week. The girls’
volleyball team completed their season and Melissa Reis
was named to the All-District Volleyball team.
Congratulations go to Melissa.
During contact time Mr. Bill Allen’s
group has been looking at green technology. Through their
research three students, Kelsey Robinson, Racheal Harlow,
and Brooke Dunigan, came up with 10 ways on how to save
the planet. 1. Turn off lights in your house when not in
use. 2. Shut doors and windows if air/heat is on! 3.
Turn off your computer because it uses a lot of energy.
4. Shade your windows in summer, and leave them open in
winter for the sunlight. 5. Plant trees and bushes
around your house. 6. Use cold water when washing your
clothes. 7. Buy more energy saving home products! 8.
Unplug any electrical device that isn’t being used. 9.
Reuse/recycle whatever you can. 10. Use rags and hand
towels instead of napkins and paper towels. All of these
seem to be excellent advice.
The seniors this week will have a
chance to talk to two different college representatives.
Tuesday morning at 9:30 Billy Barbour will be here from
Maysville Community to talk to interested seniors and at
1:00 a University of Kentucky rep will be here to talk to
those considering attending UK.
Tuesday night the Academic Team will
play a make-up match with Montgomery Co. The match will
be at LCHS and begin at 6:00. The team would greatly
appreciate any support. Come out and see them in action.
The Youth Service Center and Family
Resource Centers will be meeting with the Grandparent
Support Group on Wednesday after school at the Extension
Center. This week they will be working on making pumpkins
for their grandchildren. Any grandparent that has a
grandchild attending a school in Lewis County is welcome
to attend and become a part of this group.
As the week winds down, Friday will
be an exciting day. From 4:00 to 6:00 McDonald’s and John
Clark Oil will be hosting a tailgate party at the BP for
the Lewis County Lions game against West Carter. This
will also be senior parent night which will begin at 6:00
at the football field. The seniors and parents of the
football team, volleyball team, academic team,
cross-country team, golf, band and color guard will be
recognized.
The high school would also like to
congratulate the 7th grade football team and
wish them luck in state competition at Greenup on
Tuesday. Congratulations also to the 7th grade
girl’s basketball team for winning on Saturday and being
in state competition in November. Good luck as you
proceed.
What’s Happening at LCHS—Oct 12-Oct 16
Students have just returned from fall break and are
beginning their second nine weeks of school. This week,
along with their academics, students have other activities
that have been planned.
The academic team will head to Bath
County on Monday. The game scheduled for Thursday with
Montgomery at Lewis has been rescheduled for October 20th.
The academic team is 2-1 in the league having defeated
Bracken County and St. Patrick. Their only lose has come
from Mason County. Come out Tuesday evening, Oct. 20, and
watch the academic team compete against Montgomery.
On Tuesday of this week, the Lady
Lions volleyball team will travel to Russell for district
competition. The first game of competition will place
Raceland against Greenup at 6:00 and the second game will
have Lewis against Russell at 7:15. The Lady Lions have
made progress the last few games and are looking forward
to competing against Russell. Make your way to Russell
and watch the Lady Lions compete.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
pictures will be taken at LCHS. Tuesday the underclassmen
will have make-ups and retakes. Also, the faculty and
staff will have their pictures taken for the Safe School
Program. Wednesday the senior females will have their
formal pictures taken and on Thursday the senior males
will have their pictures taken.
Thursday is Parent Teacher Conference
(PTC) starting at 3:30. All parents should try to attend
and talk to their son or daughter’s teachers and find out
how successful they are doing. Communication is much
needed between parent, teacher and student. One way to do
this is through PTC. Come out between 3:30 and 6:30 and
learn about your child’s education.
Friday the Lions varsity football
will travel to Russell for a district competition. The
Lions, although they have lost the last few games, seem to
be improving. Go to Russell and support your Lions.
Saturday the cross country and band
will be traveling in different directions. The cross
country team will compete in the Russell Red Devil
Invitational; whereas, the Band will travel to Morehead
and compete in the MSU Marching Band Contest.
The faculty, staff, and students all
wish each of the competitors a successful event and
hopefully will bring home victories. |
